Diabetes and Social Security Disability
Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce (or misuses) insulin, the hormone needed to convert starches and other foods into the energy we use every day. Diabetes affects both adults and children. The cause of this disease is not yet known; however environmental factors, such as obesity, as well as genetics do play a role. The symptoms of diabetes include:
- Frequent urination
- Extreme thirst
- Extreme hunger
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue
- Vision problems
Many people often suffer from these symptoms even if they do not have diabetes. Because these symptoms are rather mild and most people do suffer from them, diabetes often goes undiagnosed.
There are four major types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes; type 2 diabetes; gestational diabetes; and pre-diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is when the body fails to produce insulin. Type 2 diabetes results from insulin resistance and deficiency. Gestational diabetes is seen when pregnant women who have never had diabetes before suddenly become diabetic during pregnancy. Pre-diabetes is a condition of high blood glucose levels, but not quite high enough to be considered type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes is included in conditions covered under Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). The listing of covered diseases does not distinguish between the types of diabetes. Whether or not benefits will be granted if you suffer from diabetes depends on the effect the disease is having on your life.
