First Steps - Assisting Families of Infants and Toddlers with Developmental Delays
Mississippi's Department of Health has an early intervention program for families of infants and toddlers. The "First Steps" program is for infants and toddlers (birth to age 3) who have developmental delays. The program matches the unique needs of the infant or toddler and provides families with educational material and other resources needed to aide in recognizing developmental problems as early as possible. Each qualified child will receive an individual assessment that will include input from parents and various relatives. A service coordinator will be assigned to each qualified family to assist in developing an individualized family service plan (IFSP) to ensure that appropriate services are being provided to the child and family through professional resources within the community. To learn more about "First Steps" or to schedule an assessment for your child, contact your local Mississippi Department of Health office. If you are in the Jackson area, please call (601) 576-7427, those from other areas may call toll free 1-800-451-3903.
