Ohio Works First to Help You

If you or a loved one has a disability, there may be a time where you need some extra cash. Ohio Works First provides limited-time cash assistance to eligible families through the state's Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program. Through this program, cash assistance is provided to eligible families for up to three years (unless a county approves an extension). However, if you are applying only for a child, there are no time limits for cash assistance. Ohio Works First is open to all Ohio residents, regardless of the county in which they live. Each county develops its own policy to determine hardship levels and how much aid should be given per family. A family may apply for an extension of their aid two years after they have initially received assistance. Applications for Ohio Works First can be picked up and filed at your local County Department for Family and Job Services. To be eligible for the Ohio Works First program, applicants must: • Be a child under the age of 19 who's in an assistance group • Be a pregnant woman at least six months pregnant • Be in an approved adult-supervised living arrangement, or live with a parent or legal guardian if applicant is unmarried, under the age of 18 or a pregnant minor • Sign a self-sufficiency contact to apply for or receive benefits Benefits are issued to Ohio residents through check, direct deposit or on a prepaid debit card, called the "Ohio Eppicard". In 2008 the average gross income limit for a qualifying family of three was $734. However, that amount increases each year. Two years ago Ohio Works First average payment to a family of three was $434. This amount may have also changed.
