Is Taking Care of Yourself or Your Home Too Much of a Chore?

If it is the Columbus, OH Department of Development has ways of helping you. The Department's Division of Housing has established the Chores program where senior citizens and individuals with disabilities can receive free minor repairs to their home. The home repair and maintenance work for eligible individuals must be $1,000 or less including supplies and labor, and must be for the health or safety of the individual. Persons applying for these programs must meet the following requirements: • 60 years of age or older • Physically disabled • Homeowner • Resident of Columbus, OH • Income at 80% or less as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development guidelines • Income at 80% HUD ar media income (AMI) There are three organzinations that work directly with the department to help those in need; the Economic and Community Development Institute (ECDI), LifeCare Alliance, and Rebuilding Together Columbus are all ready to assist selected residents. Below are summaries of each organization. Please select the links for contact and application information. ECDI: • Since its development in January 2005, it has served 291 clients by spending $532,680 in home repairs • All repairs are completed by licensed, bonded and insured contractors of Ohio • Repairs may include work on plumbing systems, heating systems, hot water heaters, hazardous electrical systems, or severely deteriorated roofs, walls, windows or doors • Installations in homes to make them more accessible for those with disabilities are also performed. Safety bars in bathrooms, handrails, expanding doorways and wheelchair ramps are all modifications that the program provides. LifeCare Alliance (Help at Home): • Provides personal care and homemaking services to chronically ill adults • Staff member or volunteer trained in homemakeing can help with light cleaning, laundry, preparing a light meal, running errands and other miscellaneous tasks • Agency Van services to deliver personal care and Homemaking Services • Provides personal care such as bathing, observing and monitoring health status, mouth and skin care and respite care (given by a certified specially trained Home Health Aide) Rebuilding Together Columbus (Safe at Home): • Provides the same type of assistance as ECDI • Does not repair mobile homes • Owner must occupy house for three or more years • Single family structure must be in sound condition
