Task Force for the Homeless

I found a great program for individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in the Metro Atlanta area. The mission of Metro Atlanta's Task Force for the Homeless is to represent and promote the dignity and rights of individuals who are homeless. The Task Force also belieives that everyone has a right to basic economic and social needs including safe, decent and affordable housing; affordable health care and civil rights. To achieve their goal of preventing homelessness and finding appropriate and affordable housing for all, they offer various programs and services. A brief description of their programs and services are provided below: 24/HR Homeless Assistance Hotline For many, this is the initial point of contact with the Task Force. Through the 24-Hour Homeless Assistance Hotline, individuals who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless are referred to various resources that they need including shelter, food, housing and employment. The hotline is a statewide toll-free service that is fully computerized and constantly operating. To access the hotline, call 1-800-448-0636 or 404-589-9495. Street Outreach and Transportation Through this program, unsheltered individuals are linked with desperately-needed resources such as shelter, medical care, food and clothing. The program also provides homeless individuals as well as their families with free, year-round transportation to and from emergency shelters, overflow facilities and other vital resource and service agencies. Day Service Center The Day Service Center assists individuals within obtaining permanent, affordable housing and livable-wage employment. The Center also provides workshops, job training and employment referrals, vision screenings, addiction recovery placement, HIV testing and referrals for medical and psychiatric care. The Center also provides assistance for individuals with disabilities, those who recently relocated and those in need of addiction treatment. Emergency Overflow Shelter The Overflow Shelter is available to anyone who is in need of refuge from the streets and is usually the first step in seeking additional services and resources. Working with the Day Service Center, Overflow Shelter encourages individuals to seek additional services for whatever needs they may have. The Overflow Shelter not only provides nightly shelter but it also provides the opportunity to positively impact the lives of homeless individuals.
