Mobile Community Action

MCA is the Community Action Agency for Washington and Mobile County. The goal of MCA is to connect low-income families and individuals with information, programs and resource referrals that are available to assist them in reaching their fullest potential to help them remove themselves from poverty. MCA offers clients a wide variety of programs and services. Listed below is a brief summary of the services and programs offered: Rent/Mortgage Payments - Through this program MCA provides assistance to households who are in danger of becoming homeless through unforeseen circumstances. Transitional Housing - Through this program, temporary homes are provided for income eligible families who are homeless. The program bridges the gap between emergency shelter and permanent housing for homeless families. Families are connected with a housing coordinator who works with them to achieve long-term housing solutions and provide support services and ongoing case management. While living in transitional housing, residents receive a rental subsidy based on their income. Utility Assistance/LIHEAP - LIHEAP is provided to assist families in paying their electric and gas bills. Emergency Food Voucher - This program provides food vouchers to families on a temporary emergency basis. Prescription Purchase - When funds are available, prescription purchases are made by voucher to pharmacies for eligible households. Weatherization - Home repair assistance is provided to assistance low-income families in reducing their energy bills . Home repairs include: weather stripping, repairing broken windows, doors and holes in floors and insulation and caulking. Volunteer Income Tax Preparation (VITA) - Provides free tax preparation for low-income customers. Adult Basic Education - Provide low-income residents with help in obtaining their GED. Computer Labs - Provides access to computer technology and offers introductory classes in typing, Windows 2000, MS Word and MS Excel. Emergency Utility / Water Assistance (EUWAP) - Provides a one-time water bill payment for eligible households. Information & Referral - Provides information and referrals to other resources when additional assistance is needed. Christmas Assistance - Provides assistance to families who cannot afford the expenses of providing gifts for their children. Food and toys for children are provided through donations from the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots. Head Start Program - Head Start is a national school program for pre-school aged children. Head Start promotes school readiness by enhancing their social and cognitive development skills.
