Need Food in a SNAP?
Here's a program that may be useful to those in Mississippi who are waiting for their Social Security Disability benefits to process: If you are in need of food assistance, contact the Mississippi Department of Human Services (MDHS) to determine if you qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP is a program that assists lower income families in obtaining the help needed in order to purchase food. United States Department of Agriculture has set the regulations and laws to determine the eligibility criteria and other factors for households. As listed on MDHS's website, you may qualify for this program if you:
Work for low wages Unemployed or work part-time Receive TANF, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or other assistance payments Elderly or disabled and live on a small incomeIf you fall into one of the categories above, you may be eligible for the program. To apply, simply complete a SNAP application and sign it. Once this step has been completed, the local county office will set up an interview. Once eligibility has been confirmed applicants will be able to receive benefits within 30 days based on date of application. Applications for SNAP can be obtained from a MDHS county office in person or by phone, fax or mail. Applications can also be found online via MDHS website. The website also provides more information about the guidelines and eligibility of SNAP.
