Free Tax Assistance Programs
Income tax season can be a burden for all individuals. It can be especially difficult for individuals who lack the necessary tax knowledge or resources to prepare their own taxes or have them done professionally. For individuals in need of tax assistance, the IRS offers free tax help for all taxpayers who are qualified. Through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program (TCE), qualified individuals are paired with trained community volunteers that can assist individuals with special tax credits such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly or individuals with disabilities. The IRS also offers the Armed Forces Tax Council program (AFTC) that provides assistance to military personnel and serves as an intermediary for military families for the IRS. These programs are offered at various tax sites and also give individuals the opportunity to file taxes electronically for free. Tax sites generally include libraries, universities, malls, community centers and any other convenient sites. To learn more about these programs or to volunteer your services please visit the IRS website. Through this site you will be able to find more information about the various tax assistance programs, information for completing tax returns and ideas of what to bring to your appointments.
