Living Independently
This organization may be helpful to individuals with disabilities in the Birmingham, AL area: Many people believe that once an individual develops or is diagnosed with a disability, they are no longer able to live independent lives. With a mission change this way of thought and to empower people with disabilities to fully participate in their community, the Independent Living Resources of Greater Birmingham (ILRGB) provides individuals with the support they need to reach their own independent living goals. ILRGB believes that the foundation of living independently is based upon advocacy and includes peer relationships and principles of integration. With this philosophy, ILRGB promotes equal access and disability rights through advocacy and public awareness services to assist individuals with disabilities in becoming active citizens within their communities. In addition to advocacy and public awareness, ILRGB provides many services throughout Jefferson, Walker, Shelby, Blount and St. Clair counties. These services are designed to help individuals gain the knowledge and skills needed to become more involved in their community. Some of the services offered include:
- Advocacy - Assist people with disabilities to become self-advocates
- Information and Referral - Provide information via phone about disability related services
- Computer Lab/Internet Access - Provided for learning independent living skills and becoming comfortable with computers
- Homeless Services - Available for persons without permanent housing
- ALA-WIN - Supply SSI and SSDI beneficiaries with information regarding employment options
- Staff Training - Assist businesses/organizations to better understand disability issues and how they can accommodate clients/customers with disabilities.
