Energy Assistance for Low-Income Families

The following service may be helpful for individuals in the Atlanta, GA area who are in need of energy/utility assistance: As anticipated record high summer temperatures approach and record low winter temperatures leave, many families are tasked with the challenge of making their homes more energy efficient in an attempt to lower their home energy bills. This is where Southeast Energy Assistance steps in! Southeast Energy Assistance (SEA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping low-income families improve their living conditions. Through conservation programs, the mission of SEA is to provide low-income individuals and families with direct assistance that will help to improve their living and housing conditions. Through WAP, SEA personnel provide home repairs that are designed to save energy and reduce or eliminate environmental hazards. In addition to providing weatherization services, SEA also offers a water conservation program. Brief descriptions of each program are provided below:

  • Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) - Through WAP, SEA performs any energy related repairs that will assist families in reducing heat and/or air conditioning waste. These repairs may include: replacing/repairing damaged windows and exterior doors; installing attic, floor and wall insulation; installing bath exhausts fans and weather stripping; Carbon Monoxide testing; caulking and furnace repairs or replacement.
  • Care & Conserve Program (C&C) - In conjunction with the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management, C&C promotes water conservation by performing water audits, conservation counseling and plumbing repair. These repairs and audits are essential to preventing health and safety problems due to mold, mildew, plumbing backups and other concerns. Repairs include: replacing/repairing leaking faucets, lines, run-on toilets, drains and sewers; the installation of faucet aerators, low-flow showerheads and ultra low-flow toilets and payment assistance.

SEA's programs and services are intended to provide help for households living at the poverty level. However, priority is given to the elderly and individuals with disabilities. To be eligible for the services provided through SEA, applicants must meet the income requirements set forth by the federal guidelines. Applicants, whose income exceeds 200% of the Poverty Index, are not eligible to receive assistance. The only exceptions to this requirement are households with a member who receives Supplemental Security Income(SSI).
