When GOOD Things Happen in Alabama

The following information may be helpful to those in Alabama who were affected by the April 2011 storms: The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Governor's Office on Disability (GOOD) has teamed up to make sure that those with disabilities have equal access to the recovery efforts for those affected by the April 2011 tornadoes and storms. GOOD and FEMA has provided printed materials, for those who are blind or vision impaired, regarding information on how to receive assistance in Braille and large print. Sign language interpreters, amplified phones and other technologies are also available by request. FEMA also has a TTY line (1-800-462-7585) to allow individuals who are hard of hearing or those with speech impairs to register for assistance or receive answers to any questions they may have regarding assistance. In addition to providing the printed materials and the TTY line, FEMA has also assigned Disability Integration Specialists throughout Alabama to assist those with disabilities in applying for recovery assistance. All individuals affected by the April tornadoes who are in need of disaster assistance through FEMA must apply for assistance by June 25, 2011. Currently there are 27 recovery centers across the state that are open to assist in the recovery of storm survivors. Beginning June 6, all recovery centers will be open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 am to 6:00pm. Before visiting a recovery center, storm survivors are encouraged to register with FEMA by calling the hotline 1-800-621-3362 (TTY: 1-800-462-7585). Individuals may also register with FEMA online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov. For more information about disaster recovery services in Alabama, call GOOD at 888-879-3582 or FEMA at 800-621-3362.
