The following program offers utility assistance for individuals in the Columbus, MS area: Through a partnership with customers who donate through their monthly electric bills, Columbus Light & Water (CL&W) created a special fund for families and individuals in need. CL& W's SHARE ONE program was established for individuals who do not qualify for the state's LIHEAP program but are in need of temporary assistance to pay their utility bills. Customers are encouraged to apply for assistance as soon as possible. Those who wait until the bill's due date to apply for assistance, delay the SHARE ONE process. To qualify for assistance through SHARE ONE, families and/or individuals must demonstrate their inability to pay their utility bills due to a recent job loss, disability, unforeseen emergency/crisis situation or any other verifiable situation. Although SHARE ONE is funded by CL&W & its customers, it is administered by Helping Hands, a local non-profit agency. The agency screens each applicant and determines their need. First priority for assistance is given to:

  • The elderly (individuals over 65)
  • Individuals with disabilities
  • Families below Federal Poverty Line
  • Individuals who demonstrate a verifiable need for utility assistance

Once a request for assistance is received by Helping Hands, they will verify the request with CL&W to confirm the amount owed and obtain payment information. Before determining eligibility, an applicant's payment history will be reviewed. Once an applicant has been approved for assistance, they will receive a voucher stating the amount of payment to submit to CL& W's Customer Service Department for payment. Assistance provided through SHARE ONE cannot be used for deposits, reconnect fees or penalties that may have occurred on the account.
