The Wonderful Shelter of Oz
Here's an organization that offers shelter and a variety of services to those in the New Orleans, LA area: Since 1955 the Ozanam Inn has provided shelter and food for the homeless of New Orleans. Although the Inn is a men's shelter only, it provides up to 650 meals per day to all who visit their shelter. Clothing for men, women and children are also dispensed. Vouchers for other shelters are given to the area's homeless women and children (6 per month). Other services at the Ozanam Inn include:
• Free toiletries, pajamas, a warm shower, haircuts and clean linens • Assistance with state ID's and birth certificates • In-House counseling, case management and rehab programs for various dependency programs • Basic medical examinations, treatment and prescription assistance • Dental care and exams • Assistance in locating and obtaining housing and resources for independent living • Receive and disperse mail
The Inn sleeps 96 homeless men each night and an additional 32 men on extremely cold nights. Due to all of the free services at Ozanam Inn, a rotation policy has been established to ensure that every man has a fair amount of overnight shelter. Each man is guaranteed a minimum of 10 nights of shelter, per year. After that he may get in by signing up for the waiting list. However, there is no maximum number of nights a man may stay at the shelter. No one is ever turned away until all of the beds are filled.
