Don't Ignore Your Mental Health

The term "disability" is not used to refer to physical disabilities only. It is also used to refer to those who are affected by mental illness. Having a mental illness or impairment is a serious medical illness that can have a profound effect on an individual's life. Mental impairment, or mental illness, is a broad term that is used to describe a wide range of disorders that affects an individual's cognitive process, coping skills, their behavior and their mood. The severity of many of the symptoms associated with mental impairments often affects an individual's ability to maintain focus, manage relationships or carry out their responsibilities which often leads to being unable to perform basic job duties.

92296_the_stress_.jpgTo help those in need, many community based organizations nationwide has teamed up with Screening for Mental Health, Inc. (SMH) to offer anonymous self-assessments for a variety of mental health issues. Mental illnesses are serious conditions and should not be ignored. Although "Mental Illness Awareness Week" was held October 2-8, 2011 and "National Depression Screening Day" was held October 6, 2011, individuals are still encouraged to learn more about mental health and to be screened for mental health illnesses.
