This week is National Sleep Awareness Week. March 5-11 is devoted to increase awareness about just how important sleep truly is.

 SleepSleep is essential for a person’s health and wellbeing, yet millions of people do not get enough sleep and many suffer from lack of sleep. Depriving your body of the sleep it needs to function properly can increase your risk of a number of diseases and health problems. Chronic sleep loss can contribute to health problems such as weight gain, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and a decrease in the immune system’s power. Many physical problems can interfere with your ability to fall asleep or stay asleep. Arthritis and other conditions that cause pain, backache or other discomfort can make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. A lack of adequate sleep can also affect a person’s judgment, mood, ability to learn and retain information and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injury. If you are having sleep difficulties, it is a good idea to talk to a physician or mental health provider to get the proper diagnosis and treatment. There are many different reasons why it is important to get enough sleep. A few reasons include:

  • Mood
  • Cardiovascular Health
