New Additions to Compassionate Allowances!

In an effort to continue fast-tracking decisions for individuals with the most serious disabilities, the SSA has added new conditions to their Compassionate Allowances program:

Unfortunately, many individuals have serious debilitating conditions, families to care for or bills to pay and can’t afford to wait that long to receive benefits. In 2008, the Social Security Administration (SSA) introduced the Compassionate Allowances program to help individuals receive their Social Security Disability benefits sooner. In a continuing effort to expedite the process, the SSA recently announced the addition of 52 new medical conditions to the program. The new conditions, effective August of 2012, primarily include neurological disorders, cancers and rare diseases.

The goal of the SSA’s Compassionate Allowances program is to identify and fast-track the disability decisions for individuals with the most serious disabilities to ensure they receive benefits within days opposed to months or possibly even years. Through the use of highly developed new information technology, the SSA is able to distinguish diseases or conditions that undoubtedly meet the statutory standards for disability and quickly make benefit decisions. The disabilities included on the list of Compassionate Allowances include certain cancers, brain disorders, rare genetic disorders, immune system conditions, early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and a variety of other disorders that now, with the announcement of the 52 new conditions, equal a total of 165 disorders.

To date, the Compassionate Allowances program has helped nearly 173,000 applicants receive benefits the SSA to quickly approve disability benefits for nearly 173,000 applicants.
