For people with a chronic medical condition, it may be more difficult to sense and respond when temperatures change.  This could be due to a type of medication they are taking that could worsen the effects of extreme heat.  The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people in this category follow the set of guidelines below.

  • If you feel overheated, take a cool shower or bath.
  • Offer to check on a friend or neighbor, and have someone do the same for you.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink more water than usual even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Watch your local news and weather often for up-to-date safety and health information and services.
  • Wear clothes that are light-light colored, loose and lightweight.

Listed below are some common warning signs and symptoms of  heat exhaustion.

  • Fast, weak pulse
  • Feeling faint or fainting
  • Feeling weak
  • Heavy sweating
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Pale, cold, and clammy skin

A person may be having a heat stroke if they are experiencing the symptoms below.

  • Body temperature above 103 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Hot red skin – either moist or dry
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Unconsciousness
  • If you or someone you know experiences any of the symptoms of heat exhaustion or stroke, seek medical care immediately.
