Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services helps people with disabilities.

Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services (MDRS)helps people with disabilities to gain employment, retain employment and/or to live independently by working with both disabled individuals and employers.

MDRS, through its Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, works with people with disabilities to help them overcome their physical or mental limitations. This enables them to be a greater asset for an employer. In addition, the Office operates 17 community rehabilitation centers located throughout the state providing job training and actual work experience. The Office has enabled thousands of Mississippians to become successfully employed.

Through the administration of various grants, the Office of Special Disability Programs (OSDP) focuses on increasing the quality of life and independence of people with disabilities.  These grants may assist in home or vehicle modifications and the provision of durable medical equipment. The State Attendant Care Program provides personal care services enabling a severely disabled person to live at home.

MDRS also offers special services for the blind in Mississippi. The Department operates centers for instruction and assistance in Tupelo and Jackson. The centers use advanced technology to help impaired persons to better visualize objects and to manage living with their available sight. They also teach individuals how to manage without the use of any sight. The Office assists in providing job opportunities for legally blind self-employed persons.

Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services assists with the Social Security Administration’s Ticket to Work program within the state. MDRS provides a variety of services to support employment goals of people with disabilities who desire to return to work or enter work for the first time.

People with disabilities have a friend in Mississippi through the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services. The goal of the department is to provide the “freedom to live.” More information about the Department and the services it offers can be obtained on their website at www.mdrs.state.ms.us or by calling toll free, 800-443-1000.
