December tends to put a severe strain on already stretched budgets. Millions of people are now experiencing higher home heating costs than anticipated with the onset of really cold weather seemingly arriving earlier this year when massive repeat storms swept across a large majority of the country even pushing into the deep South bringing almost unheard of November snow. Food pantries and private organizations are stepping up to help this Christmas to make sure that everyone can get food. The needy just need to know where to go or how to find the free or low cost food offered to them. Read on and we’ll show you some starting points to locate food if you need assistance.

Food Banks and Pantries

Food banks are often the best source to receive direct aid, although some pantries are now only distributing through other organizations. You can still call the food bank to request a list of organizations that may be able to help you. Visit

http://www.needhelppayingbills.com/html/food_banks.html. Scroll down almost to the bottom of the page to click on your state to see a list of pantries near you.

Rescue Missions

Although they primarily focus on the homeless, Rescue Missions can be found in almost any large city across the nation. Almost all of them serve Thanksgiving and Christmas meals and often anyone is welcome to eat at these holiday gatherings. A list of Rescue Missions can be found at http://www.scionofzion.com/rml.htm.

United Way

Some local United Way chapters provide meal vouchers, meals, and/or food in bulk. Visit the United Way’s main website at http://www.unitedway.org to drill down to your local area. Enter your zip code into the search box located in the grey area at the very top right of the web browser to find your closest office.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army states it served over 58 million meals last year making it one of the largest providers of meals to the needy. You will need to contact a local chapter for assistance. These offices can be found by going to http://www.salvationarmyusa.org and entering your zip code in the dark grey bar.

Catholic Charities

For over 100 years Catholic Charities has helped people who are in need. Currently they assist over 9 million people each year. Some branches of this organization may not have a food pantry, however they may be able to guide you to a local food bank. Use them as a resource. Visit http://catholiccharitiesusa.org/find-help to get started.

Jewish Federations of North America

JFNA can also be used as a resource. They have 153 Federations and are involved in over 300 communities helping the Jewish lineage who are in poverty or need. Many of the “local” branches in smaller towns are overseen by the New York office which can be reached by calling 212-284-6853. A comprehensive listing of the Federations can be found at http://www.jewishfederations.org/section.aspx?id=5.

American Red Cross

The Red Cross primarily operates as a disaster relief organization, but they also have vast amounts of resources to help people in need. If your local chapter does not operate a food bank they can steer you in the right direction. Start at http://www.redcross.org/find-your-local-chapter to find your closest chapter. If you visit a local office, take a few minutes to donate blood and help others too.

If you are in need of food assistance, try contacting a local food pantry. If they are unable to help contact one of the not-for-profit organizations listed above. Many people contact all of the organizations available to them to insure an adequate supply of food for their family.
