Recently the Associated Press reported that a five year old developmentally disabled child received a fractured arm when, according to police, a bus aid worker twisted the child’s arm behind his back. Abuse of people with disabilities is nothing new, but according to a study released last September by the Spectrum Institute, the number of abuse incidents may be much greater than many people think.

Baby with ComputerBabies Can’t Wait

Babies Can’t Wait (BCW) is a Georgia early intervention program offered statewide that assists children up to three years old who have disabilities access services to enhance their development. The program is operated under the federally mandated Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. However, instead of waiting for children to attend school before disabilities are recognized, BCW works with pediatricians and healthcare providers to identify potential problems in infancy so assistance can be provided immediately. Developmental delays may be physical, cognitive, communication, social/emotional or adaptive. Children may be a part of the program if they have been diagnosed with a current or future potential developmental delay.

Back Bay Mission has served the Biloxi, Mississippi area since 1922 in an effort to eradicate the sting of poverty through many programs and has helped develop many non-profits currently serving southern Mississippi that provide a soup kitchen, Head Start, a health center, counseling and housing. In recent years they have placed a focus on helping the estimated 300 to 500 homeless veterans living in south Mississippi in addition to the hundreds of non-veterans.
