Free Tax Time

It is that time of year where we all must have our yearly tax forms completed.  The Internal Revenue Service offers free assistance with tax return preparation for qualified individuals:

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers its yearly free assistance Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs.  All volunteers are IRS-certified and can assist with basic tax return questions and preparation.  

The VITA program assists individuals that make $51,000.00 yearly or less.  Some of the general information provided will be Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.  If you would like to find a location nearest to you please visit VITA Locator Tool or call 1-800-906-9887.

  • Please bring the following if you would like assistance with your tax preparation:
  • Proof of Identification – Picture ID
  • Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents
  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you your spouse and dependents
  • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
  • Date of Births for you, your spouse, and dependents on tax return
  • Wage and earning statement (s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns if available
  • Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers
  • Total paid for daycare provider and daycare provider’s tax identifying number
  • To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms

Putting an End to Homelessness

The Atlanta Mission provides emergency shelter, assistance with employment, and transitional housing to residents facing homelessness in Atlanta, GA through their program-based ministry.

The Atlanta Mission was established in 1938 as a Soup Kitchen to feed homeless men during The Great Depression.  Through the years, The Atlanta Mission has transitioned into an organization that provides not only for men but women and children as well.  With over four locations, The Atlanta Mission provides assistance to more than 950 individuals daily. homeless man with puppy and child

 

The philosophy of The Atlanta Mission is that homelessness comes in many forms and affects different people and at different times within their lives.  It is the desire of The Atlanta Mission to not only assist in taking people off the streets but also to give them a program that is built around religion to give them a firm foundation to further their lives.  The programs offered at The Atlanta Mission are multi-pronged and multi-layered to meet the needs of all individuals at different stages within their current situation.  Some of the programs offered at The Atlanta Mission are an overnight shelter, temporary shelter, personal development program, job attainment resources and transitional housing.

The requirements for admission into The Atlanta Mission are that individuals must be 18 or accompanied by a legal guardian (male children must be eleven years of age or younger). Those admitted also must fully participate in all program activities, be fully detoxified with at least 72 hours since their last use of alcohol or drugs, and be mentally and physically able to exercise proper personal hygiene and self-care. In addition to offering assistance with homelessness, The Atlanta Mission provides clothing vouchers for the homeless and low-income individuals and families through their Atlanta Mission’s Thrift Store & More.  The Atlanta Mission’s Thrift Store & More is also a ministry center where prayer is offered daily. 

The Atlanta Mission also offers long-term internships, trainee programs, and practicum volunteer experiences.  There is a six (6) month commitment expected to be considered for each of these programs. Working Together with Health Services

 

The following organization in Jackson, MS is a non-profit organization and provides free medical services for residents who are in need.

medical doctorIt is the mission of Jackson Free Clinic to reach out and assist as many residents as possible who have inadequate access to medical care.  There are no mandatory requirements to qualify for these services; anyone without medical benefits is eligible.  Some of the services provided are Physical Examination, Appropriate Laboratory Monitoring, Emergency Referral, Specialist Referral, and Health Education.

In addition to assisting residents with Health Care, Jackson Free Clinic has also expanded its practice to offer basic dental care.  The Dental care services provided are Oral Cancer Screening, Oral Hygiene Instructions, Extractions, Limited Oral Examinations and Dental X-rays (if needed). 

Jackson Free Clinic is operated by medical students of the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine and also partners with local physicians and community leaders.   While providing health care services to residents, this program also offers a hands on experience for future doctors and are always welcoming new Physician Volunteers.   If you are a Physician MD/DO and would like to volunteer you must have a permanent Mississippi license.  Without a permanent license there must be a licensed Physician present.  For addition information for Interns, Physicians and appointments please contact:

The goal of the Bethesda Project is to provide homeless men and women of Philadelphia with care and support to help each individual reach his or her highest level of self-sufficiency. Bethesda Project was founded in 1979 and has continued to reach out to those experiencing homelessness in the community. The program serves over 7,000 homeless and formally homeless men and women each year.

Happy WomanAll Bethesda Project residents are expected to contribute 30% of their monthly income toward rent, participate in daily chores, community life, case management and medication monitoring.  Residents are required to sign a lease and house rules agreement. The services offered through Bethesda Project include emergency shelter, permanent supportive housing, independent housing, transitional housing, case management services and community activities to help individuals achieve their personal goals.

The Bethesda Beacon – The Bethesda Beacon is a new initiative to make services for highly vulnerable individuals more attainable.  These services include entry-level programs for chronically homeless men and women suffering with addiction and/or mental illnesses and are offered at five Bethesda Project locations. The locations provide food, shelter and referrals to a variety of social services to its participants.

Emergency Shelter – The emergency shelter serves as a transitional facility for homeless men in the Philadelphia area before they can be housed at Bethesda Project residences.

Permanent Supportive Housing – The Bethesda Project offers supportive housing to formerly homeless men and women where they can receive supportive services to help them achieve a higher degree of independent living.

Independent Housing – Bethesda Project’s long-term independent housing options provide formerly homeless men and women that are able to live self sufficiently with stable residential facilities.

Goodwill Homes Community Services, Inc. is a community agency dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and improving the life status for many Memphians. They pride themselves in delivering the most extensive range of social services in the southwest Memphis area by focusing on the family as a whole.  This nonprofit organization has answered the needs of the Memphis commun1078240 family_fun_4ity by providing innovative leadership to empower clients to become and remain self-sufficient. Services offered by Goodwill Homes Community Services, Inc include:

Bearman Golden Gardens, Inc. – Provides reasonably priced one bedroom apartments for independent seniors ages 62 years and older. Residents must meet income eligibility requirements.

Foster Care Program – Goodwill Homes Community Services’ accredited foster care program provides a positive and supportive family setting to children who are unable to live at home. The program offers intergenerational activities and counseling on individual, group and family levels. Additionally, crisis intervention services are available 24/7.

Head Start Program – Provides comprehensive pre-school services for children, including those with disabilities, between 3-5 years of age. Parents are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities geared toward the whole family. Head Start also ensures that health, mental health, nutrition assessment, dental exams, vision and hearing screening and other services are provided on an as needed basis.  Participants must meetfederal income guidelines.

Jacqulyn Shropshire Learning Center – The Jacqulyn Shropshire Learning Center offers literacy programs and assistance with math, reading, language, computer literacy, problem solving and GED preparation.

Senior Citizens Center/Adult Day Care Program – This program provides a stimulating environment for individuals, 55 years and older, to socialize with other individuals their age and participate in activities that focus on preventing institutionalization and alleviate isolation. In addition to serving as a social center for seniors, this program also provides Adult Day Care services for individuals 60 years and older and younger adults with physical, mental or emotional disabilities. Activities offered at the center include low impact exercise classes, ceramics classes, sewing circle, and field trips.  Lunch and transportation to and from the center and to medical appointments are also provided.
