A Breath of Fresh Air

The month of November is focused on the awareness of COPD prevention. Many suffer from this progressive disability. It is very important to educate oxygenourselves on how to prevent and slow the progress of this disease.

COPD is a slowly developing disease of the lungs that makes it hard to breathe. Millions suffer from this, and some do not even know they have it. It is mostly caused from smoking, air pollutants, dust, and even chemical fumes inhaled over time. Smoking is the main cause of COPD. Signs or symptoms include:

  • A consistent cough
  • Coughs that produce mucus
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in chest

Because this disease is located in the lungs, over time, it makes it very difficult to breathe and eventually can prevent some individuals from doing simple things such as walking. If you suspect you have COPD, you can take a breathing test and talk to your doctor about treatment options.

Unfortunately there is no cure yet; however, there are some things that you can do to prevent COPD and slow the progression of it. They are as follows:

  • Do not begin smoking.
  • If you do smoke, quit now.
  • Talk with your doctor about getting flu and pneumonia vaccines .
  • Get ongoing medical care from a specialist.
  • Avoid lung irritants such as like secondhand smoke, dust, harmful chemicals and air pollution.

Take the necessary precautions and steps to keep your lungs healthy and clear. To learn more about COPD and the symptoms and treatments of this disease, click here.
