Striving to Assist

Often times, families are faced with difficulties that are beyond their control. When hardships arise, those families need someone to turn to for strength and support. The following organization in the Atlanta area can help ease the burden of life’s unanticipated challenges:1178513 samaritan

The Midtown Assistance Center (MAC) is a non-profit interfaith organization that aims to help prevent homelessness and hunger throughout Atlanta. The goal of MAC is to provide emergency assistance to low-income families and individuals in Midtown and Downtown Atlanta who are:

  • Currently working, but have not received a pay check
  • Not receiving any public assistance and are completing job training
  • Employed, but are facing a temporary crisis due to sickness, work hours being temporarily cut back or a layoff

In fulfilling its goals, MAC provides several services to those in need dependent upon their circumstance. These services include:

  • Financial Support (past-due rent or utilities)
  • Assistance Obtaining Official State Identification
  • Short-term Food Assistance
  • MARTA Cards or Transit Tokens (must be employed or interviewing)
  • Men’s Clothing & Work Shoes (& on occasion, tools)
  • Counseling & Referrals

In order to receive services such as food, utility assistance or rent assistance, individuals must live within one of MAC’s six Atlanta zip code service areas: 30303, 30308, 30309, 30313, 30312 and 30314.

Prior to receiving services through MAC, individuals in need of assistance must call to schedule an appointment. When calling to schedule an appointment, individuals will be pre-screened by a MAC staff member to determine eligibility and the specific types of assistance needed. To verify the specific type or amount of assistance needed, individuals may be asked to bring certain forms of documentation to their appointment. After approving individuals for assistance, MAC conducts a follow up to ensure that the funds issued are being utilized as intended.

Based on their funding, MAC may also be able to provide services to residents of other Fulton and DeKalb county zip codes.

If you or someone you know has found themselves in a tough financial situation, the following program may be able to assist those living in Michigan:

The main goal of the Family Independence Program (FIP) is to help families reach a level of self-sufficiency. To achieve this goal FIP provides families in need with temporary cash assistance to pay for living expenses such as rent, heat, utilities, clothing, food and personal care items. FIP applicants and recipients may also be referred to JET (Jobs, Education and Training) for assistance in finding a job or to develop the skills needed to qualify for a Bank Piggy_savings_237743_ljob. Other needs related to employment such as transportation and childcare may also be provided.

Eligibility for FIP and the amount of assistance a family can receive is based on the number of people within your household, court-ordered child support expenses paid by your household (if applicable) and your total income. Unless you and your family qualify for an extension or exception, families cannot receive FIP for more than 48 months in their lifetime. Months do not count if:

  • They were before October 2007
  • You are deferred
  • You are working and following your Family Self-Sufficiency Plan
  • You live in a county with a high unemployment rate
  • Who qualifies for FIP?

To be eligible to receive assistance through FIP, individuals must:

    • Be a Michigan resident & not receiving assistance from another state
    • Be a parent, legal guardian or relative acting as a parent for a child under the age of 18 or a high school student between the ages of 1819.
    • Be pregnant
    • Have cash assets less than $3,000
