For over 30 years, the Lighthouse of Oakland County (LOC) has been providing inspiration and support services for low-income families throughout the community. By offering a full-range of services, LOC helps families and individuals transition from instability and crisis situations to stability, independence and self-sufficiency. Through their services and programs, LOC empowers clients to develop their potential and strengthen their communities. LOC offers its services through three (3) key programs: Lighthouse Community Development (LCD), Lighthouse Emergency Services (LES) and Lighthouse PATH (PATH).  Listed below are brief descriptions of each program:

  • Lighthouse Community Development (LCD): Through LCD, Lighthouse rejuvenates and revitalizes communities throughout Oakland County to help low-to-moderate income families secure affordable housing. In addition to helping families find housing, LCD also provides foreclosure intervention counseling and home ownership educational programs.
  • Lighthouse PATH (PATH): As one of the most valuable programs offered, PATH provides homeless mothers and their children with long-term housing in a safe and nurturing environment. PATH also provides women with the support services they need to achieve self-sufficiency and to establish a healthy family environment for their children.
  • Lighthouse Emergency Services (LES): LES provides services to individuals who need immediate and emergency assistance. Services offered include: emergency food assistance, housing assistance, medical assistance, utility assistance, case management and occasional transportation assistance. In addition to offering these services for families and individuals experiencing crisis and/or emergency situations, the services offered through LES is also available to seniors and individuals with disabilities.

The goal of Community Family Life Services (CFLS) is to help resolve their clients’ short-term needs and aid them in breaking the cycle of poverty that leads to the path of homelessness. As a multi-faceted human services organization, CFLS offers a variety of services to meet the needs of Washington, D.C.’s most vulnerable residents. Listed below are brief descriptions of the services offered by CFLS:

Permanent and/or Transitional Housing – CFLS offers affordable housing for families and/or individuals who are homeless or those who have physical and/or mental disabilities.

Emergency Services – In an effort to prevent eviction or the disconnection of utilities, CFLS offers emergency food to Ward 6 residents.

Clothing Assistance

– Through the clothing assistance program, CFLS distributes clothing to men, women and children as an effort to help families and individuals meet their basic needs.

 

HIV/Aids Counseling – Ensures that individuals with HIV or AIDS have access to and is capable to utilize necessary medical, mental health and other supportive services.

Support Services – In addition to providing families and individuals with the basic necessities of life, CFLS offers life skill development services, therapy and substance abuse counseling.

Employment Assistance – CFLS helps individuals reach their career goals by enhancing their employability and job skills. CFLS also assist individuals with job searches and resume and cover letter writing.

Youth Mentoring – Provides youth with the opportunity to foster sustainable positive relationships with adults as well as their peers. The goal of the program is to help youth fight the causes of homelessness before it starts and to give them the encouragement they need to become self-sufficient adults.

Youth Development Programs – To promote and support the academic and social success of the youth within the community, CFLS offers a year-round after-school program as well as a summer camp program for families who live in Wards 6, 7 and 8.

Parent Center – Through the Parent Center, CFLS helps families identify their strengths and encourage family development.

Providing a Voice for Children’s Behavioral Health

Many parents who have a child with a developmental impairment find themselves in need of assistance, advice and support. If you are in need of help, look no further. The following organization offers advocacy to families and individuals in the State of Maryland:

The Maryland Coalition of Familie898215 family_s for Children’s Mental Health (MCF) is committed to creating a network of knowledge and support to benefit children and youth with behavioral needs. The organization was created through the joint efforts and shared commitment of eight separate entities focused on family and advocacy.  Since its incorporation, MCF has become the statewide voice for children’s behavioral health. The coalition provides assists families through a variety of services, which include:

Family Navigators– MCF provides the no cost service of Family Navigators to any parent or caregiver of a child, 0-21 years of age, with special needs.  A Family Navigator is a true-life parent who has cared for a child with needs and has received training to help them assist families.  They are knowledgeable about the services provided in their communities and are there to explain rights, listen to concerns and assist with the application process.

Wraparound and Family Support Partners – “Wraparound” is the name of a program that provides a collection of services and supports that are “wrapped around” the child and family.  A family must be referred and approved by the Department of Juvenile Services, Department of Social Services, Maryland Cares, or Rural Cares to participate in the program.  Once approved, the family is paired with the Care Management Entity which provides families with healthcare, other service options and assigns a Care Coordinator.  The family is also assigned a Family Support Partner through the MCF.  The Family Support Partner, much like a Family Navigator, provides support and assists the family make choices regarding services, support groups and educational programs for their child with behavioral needs.

Family Leadership Institute – The Family Leadership Institute (FLI) is an intensive training and leadership program tasked to prepare parents and caregivers on how to become better advocates for their children and leaders that shape the systems designed to provide forms of care.  The institute’s typically runs over the course of  six weekends a few times a year and teaches parents and caregivers how to access information, leadership tactics, and presents a great forum and networking opportunity with other leaders and professionals in the field of children’s mental/behavioral health.

Need Rental Assistance?

Are you in need of rental assistance, but are unsure where to turn? The following program offers support to those in need throughout the District of Columbia area:

The Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) is administered through the District of Columbia’s Department of Human Services’ (DHS) Income Maintenance Administration (IMA). The ERAP program was established to help low-income residents who are facing various housing emergencies. Through ERAP, funding is provided to assist qualified households in paying for overdue rent, late costs, and court fees. The program also assists Housingqualified families and/or individuals moving to new homes in paying security or damage deposits and first month’s rent.

The amount of ERAP assistance paid on behalf of qualified families and/or individuals depends on the household’s income and available resources. ERAP payments awarded to qualified households can only be used once per year. To qualify for ERAP assistance, individuals must:

 

  • Be a resident of the District of Columbia
  • Meet income requirements
  • Be experiencing or facing a housing emergency
  • Have a household that includes a child under 19, an adult over 59 or an individual with a disability
