Disaster Food Stamps for Tornado Victims

Severe weather has affected many families and individuals across the country during the past few months. With the help of the Tennessee Department of Human Services, residents affected by the recent storms may be eligible to receive assistance through the D-SNAP program.

1046589 ruinsThe Midwestern and Southern region of the US has experienced several cases of severe weather during the past few months. Due to the severe weather, many families and individuals have lost their homes or received damages, placing them in a time of financial hardship. In an effort to assist local residents experiencing financial woes, the Tennessee Department of Human Services, with USDA approval, has begun to issue disaster Food Stamp benefits. Through the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP), eligible households are provided with an approved Food Stamp Disaster waiver which allows them to receive supplemental food during their time of need.

Benefits through Tennessee’s D-SNAP program are only available to Tennessee residents who reside in the ten counties that have been federally declared disaster areas. These areas include the following counties:

    • Bradley
    • Hamilton
    • McMinn
    • Polk
    • Monroe
    • Claiborne
    • Cumberland
    • Overton
    • Jackson
    • DeKalb

To receive supplemental food assistance through the D-SNAP program, residents must submit an application for D-SNAP benefits between Thursday, March 29, 2012 and Thursday, April 5, 2012. All eligible residents, including those who are currently receiving standard SNAP benefits, are asked to bring photo identification, address information, Social Security verification, statements of income or resources and estimated disaster expenses to one of the DHS offices in their county. On-site staff will determine each applicant’s eligibility and distribute D-SNAP benefits in the form of EBT cards. The benefits received through D-SNAP will represent up to a one-month allocation of food stamps and can be used for up to 90 days in any authorized SNAP grocery retailer.

There are DHS office locations in each of the ten counties that have been federally declared disaster areas; to find the DHS office location nearest you, click here.

For more information about the D-SNAP program, please call the Tennessee Department of Human Services at (615) 313-4700.
