Offered through the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB), the goal of Hunger Lifeline is to provide food for those who suffer from hunger. By calling Hunger Lifeline, individuals will be connected with local agencies and/or organizations in their area that can specifically assist them in meeting their nutritional needs. Referrals provided through Hunger Lifeline may include information on how and where to obtain groceries, the location of local soup kitchens and free meals. In addition to referring individuals to emergency food assistance programs, the Hunger Lifeline also directs clients to organizations and agencies that may offer additional services that can further assist them in meeting their various needs.  

Referrals provided through Hunger Lifeline are given every ninety (90) days to individuals in need who reside in the following CAFB service areas:

  • District of Columbia
  • Northern Virginia
  • Montgomery County
  • Prince George’s County

One of the toughest cancer cases can be those related to children; which is why Cancer Services offers a variety programs specially designed for children from zero to 21 years of age. The services offered through Cancer Services’ Children’s Programs are provided free of charge to participating families.  These services include the following programs:

  • Candlelighters – Designed for children diagnosed with cancer and their siblings, Candlelighters offers monthly activities that allow parents and children to interact with others and provide mutual support while participating in family activities.
  • Candlelighters Grant – In an effort to help families defray the high cost of medical services associated with cancer, Cancer Services offers eligible families a one-time, income dependent grant in the amount of $300. To be eligible, the child must be a registered Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge client and meet the programs income requirement.
  • Camp Care – Through Camp Care, children involved in the Candlelighters program are provided with the opportunity to attend summer day camp for a week. 
  • Kids Kare – Designed to help children of parents or guardians affected by cancer, Kids Kare offers monthly activities that provide the opportunity for children from ages 4 to 18 to interact with others.

FREE Tax Preparation Assistance!!!


tax 2Although tax season is almost over, it’s not too late to receive help. In working with the Nashville Alliance for Financial Independence (NAFI) and the United Way of Metro Nashville, Woodbine Community Organization (WCO) is once again hosting the VITA program to assist families throughout the Woodbine community as well as the Nashville area.  The VITA program, also known as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, was created to allow taxpayers to receive the full amount of their tax return without losing any of it to commercial fees or rapid refund loans. Through the program, families and working individuals throughout the Woodbine community who earned less than $49,000 in 2011 will be provided with FREE income tax preparation by IRS-certified volunteers.   Volunteers will provide eligible individuals with FREE tax preparation on a first come, first serve basis until the program ends. The last day to receive assistance through the VITA program hosted by WCO is Tuesday, April 17, 2012. Individuals and families who wish to receive assistance through VITA must provide the following items:

  • Proof of identity
  • Copies of ALL W-2, 1089 or 1099 forms
  • SS Card(s) or Individual Tax Identification Number card(s) for ALL individuals listed on return
  • Banking Information for direct deposit process
  • Child Care Provider Identification Number
  • Amounts/Dates of estimated or other tax payments made
  • In addition to hosting the VITA program, WCO offers a variety of services and programs to assist families and individuals throughout the Woodbine community in reaching self-sufficiency. The additional services offered through WCO include:

  • Multi-Family Housing Services
  • Housing & Financial Services
  • Housing Renovation Services
  • Spanish Language Program
  • LEAPs (Youth Education Program)
  • Special Needs Living Centers
