'Tis the Season to be...WARM!

For some individuals and families, the fall and winter season brings more than cold temperatures. With the recent change in weather, many families and individuals are finding it increasingly hard to keep their homes warm and pay the cost of their energy bills.

In an effort to help low-income households with their home energy bills,Help with your electric bill the federal government provides funding for families through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Through LIHEAP, families are provided with the assistance they need to keep both their homes and families warm in the winter (and cool in the summer). In addition helping families stay warm, the program also helps to reduce the risk of health and safety problems such as an illness, fire or eviction.

Distributed through local administering agencies, households may be eligible to receive the following assistance through the LIHEAP program:

• Bill payment assistance
• Energy crisis assistance
• Weatherization Repairs
• Energy-related home repairs

Eligibility for LIHEAP is generally based on an individual's income and household size. In addition to meeting income requirements, individuals must also meet the various eligibility criteria as required by their local LIHEAP administering agency. To learn more about the LIHEAP program or to find an administering agency, visit www.liheap.org.

blood sugar glucose 223243 lSay Goodbye to Diabetes - SSA Eliminates Diabetes Listing

November marks the start of American Diabetes month. During this month the American Diabetes Association is encouraging families, individuals and communities to come together and join the "Stop Diabetes" movement. According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 26 million children and adults are living with diabetes in America, and another 79 million are at a high risk for developing "Type 2" diabetes. Although diabetes has a devastating effect on individuals, families and communities; many fail to realize the seriousness of the disease or follow the proper steps to prevent or mange their condition.

Diabetes is a disease that causes the body to not produce or to misuse insulin - a hormone needed to regulate blood sugar levels for energy. Until recently, it was recognized by the Social Security Administration (SSA) as a disability and was included within Section 9 of the "List of Impairments" under the endocrine disorders. However in December of 2009, the SSA proposed to remove all the disorders listed under Section 9 due to the advancement of medical science. In addition to including diabetes, the conditions listed under Section 9 also includes pituitary gland disorders, thyroid gland disorders, parathyroid gland disorders, adrenal gland disorders and other pancreatic gland disorders. According to the SSA, "new treatments have resulted in better management of these conditions" which has caused most endocrine disorders to no longer meet the SSA's 12-month duration requirement. Under the new endocrine disorder listing, which was approved and placed into effect June 7, 2011, the SSA will no longer make disability determinations based on endocrine disorders alone. For individuals with uncontrolled endocrine disorders, disability determinations will be conducted on an individualized basis. All other impairments resulting from endocrine disorders will be evaluated under the listings of other body systems.

So what does this mean for you? Individuals who are currently receiving benefits based on endocrine disorders will not be affected by the change in listings. When revising medical listings, the SSA does not reevaluate cases that have been previously decided. Cases approved for benefits prior to the change in medical listings will continue to be reviewed under the same rules that were used when determining the beneficiaries' disability case.

If you are a loved one suffers from diabetes or other endocrine disorders and would like to learn more about receiving Social Security Disability benefits, please contact the experienced attorneys of The Cochran Firm Disability Lawyers at 1-800-THE-FIRM (1-800-843-3476). We'll work hard to help you get the benefits that you deserve.
