1277878_check_list.jpgSpeedy Decisions - New Conditons Added to Compassionate Allowance

The process of receiving Social Security disability benefits can take weeks, months and in some cases, even years. Before individuals are approved or denied their benefits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a five-step process to decide whether an individual qualifies as disabled. Through this five-step process, the SSA must determine:

• Whether an individual is working;
• If an individual's disability significantly limits their ability to do basic work;
• If an individual's disability is included on the "List of Impairments";
• Whether an individual can do the work they did before;
• If the individual can participate in another type of job

In order to determine all the factors mentioned above, the SSA evaluates an individual's medical condition, age, education, past work experience and any skills that could be used to do other work. Often times, many individuals fail to submit, simply overlook or need to provide more of the documentation that is needed in order for the SSA to evaluate their claims. Due to this, many claims are frequently denied or delayed until documentation can be provided.

In an effort to help individuals receive their benefit decisions earlier, the SSA created the Compassionate Allowances program . The Compassionate Allowances program identifies and fast-tracks disability claims of individuals with conditions that undoubtedly meet SSA's standards for disability, allowing individuals to pass through the five-step process and receive a decision quicker. The Compassionate Allowances program was started in 2008 with a list of 50 conditions and was recently updated to include 13 new medical conditions involving the immune system and neurological disorders. With the recent addition of these medical conditions, many individuals are now eligible to receive their benefit decision within days instead of months and/or years. For more information about the Compassionate Allowances program or to learn whether your condition is included on the list, click here.

Be the deciding factor in your case! Any evidence that you have to prove your disability is vital to the success of your claim. The more information that you provide to the SSA to prove your claim, the more likely you will have a successful case.
