Food with a Mission

The following organization may be helpful for individuals in the Hattiesburg, MS area who are in need of food assistance: To provide food for the elderly as well as those who are in need is the goal of The Christian Food Mission (CFM). For over 20 years, The Christian Food Mission has strived to provide assistance to elderly individuals and individuals who are in need throughout Jones County. In its early years, CFM began as a "soup kitchen" and provided free meals at noon to individuals in need. CFM has now grown to include a meal delivery program and a "food bank" program. CFM Meal Delivery Program - Through their meal distribution program, CFM volunteers distribute meals, Monday through Friday, to the elderly and individuals who are physically hindered. In addition to providing meals, volunteers also take the time to visit with each individual. In order to be eligible for the program, individuals must participate in an in-home screening and interview process. The decision for eligibility is determined by reviewing the potential client's health and lack of assistance during the day. CFM Food Bank Program - To provide assistance to households in need, CFM offers a grocery distribution program. Operating much like a food bank, CFM works in cooperation with over 50 churches to provide groceries to those in need. Individuals who are in need of assistance must visit a church to explain his or her need and also provide a letter requesting assistance. Grocery assistance through CFM is generally given for a 5-day period. Individuals in need of assistance beyond a 5-day period must earn additional assistance by working at CFM or another site. Individuals can work for one day each week to earn subsequent 7-day allotments. In addition to providing food for those in need, CFM also distributes Bibles, tracts, booklets and other Christian materials.
