Spring Into Action During Autism Awareness Month

Although April is National Autism Awareness month, the Autism Society of Greater Cleveland (ASGC) provides services and programs to promote the awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and provide support to the autism community. ASGC's mission is to serve the autism community by providing information, coordinating support services and facilitating communication to benefit those with ASD from childhood through adulthood. ASGC is a chapter of the Autism Society of America (ASA) and consist of parents, grandparents, individuals with autism and other family members, friends and professionals with the goal to comfortably and confidently work together toward creating brighter futures for those with ASD.

Getting Started: Building Skills and Learning Strategies for Work with Your Child with ASD
When: Friday, April 29, 9:00 AM-3:30 P.M.
Where: 3430 Burnet Avenue, 5th Floor

This workshop is for families who have a child that was recently disagnosed with ASD. The cost for this workshop is $15.00 and it will be located at 3430 Burnet Avenue, 5th Floor

Autism Awareness Month Family Outing
When: Saturday, April 30, 11:00 AM- 3:00 PM
Where: 24211 Center Ridge Road; Westlake, Ohio 44145

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Achievement Centers for Children will be hosting a day of family fun tailored for families with ASD children. Activities will include: bounce houses, family swims, music therapy demonstrations, live animal programs, arts and crafts projects and more! The cost for this event is $15 per family and covers all activities and food.

Turning a House Into a Home

The following organization may be helpful for individuals in the Cleveland, OH area who are need of furniture assistance:

The Cleveland Furniture Bank (CFB) was established in 2006 to restore hope to the residents of Northeast Ohio. By providing chairs, mattesses and box springs, couches, tables and dressers; CFB helps to turn a house into a home and create a more stable place to live. CFB partners with over 300 faith based, secular and social services agencies in the Cleveland area to provide assistance to those in need. Individuals eligible to receive assistance through CFB include:

• Those living in transitional housing
• Individuals with mental or physical challenges
• Victims of personal or natural catastrophes
• Young adults leaving the foster care system due to age
• Individuals recently released from incarceration

Assistance may also be available for other individuals; however, individuals who believe they may qualify for assistance must schedule a meeting with a CFB caseworker to determine eligibility. Once approved for furniture assistance, individuals are expected to provide their own means of transportation to pick up their furniture. Individuals who do not have access to transportation can take advantage of the low-priced delivery service offered by CFB.

In addition to providing furniture assistance, CFB also operates a thrift store that provides a wide variety of items including furniture, mattress sets, large and small appliances, household items and clothing. CFB recently received a generous donation of brand new clothing from a national retailer. These clothing items and various accessories are currently being sold at a low price through its thrift store.

The following organization may be helpful for individuals in the Birmingham, AL area who are homeless and in need of assistance:

With the goal to rescue hope and save lives, The Firehouse Shelter provides a nurturing and caring environment that empowers the homeless men of Birmingham to reach their full potential. As the area's only homeless men's emergency shelter that does not have a specific time limit on the length of the stay, The Firehouse Shelter provides various programs to assist men in achieving success and ending their homeless. These programs include:

Emergency Shelter
• Only homeless men's emergency shelter with no time limit on length of the stay.
• Serves three hot meals and a snack daily to each guest.
• Case management worker assigned to each guest.

Feeding Program
•Birmingham's only agency that serves three full, hot and nutritious meals a day
•Lunch is open to anyone.

Day Shelter
•Largest Day Shelter for homeless men in Birmingham.
•Safe and sheltering environment open five days a week and on all inclement weather days.
•Provides access to laundry, showers, toilets, lockers, toiletries, weekly doctor's visit, and afternoon snack.
•Offers workshops and groups for self improvement and empowerment.
•Networks with other agencies for health, medical, educational and employment opportunities.

TEAM Program
•Substance abuse treatment program structured specifically for homeless men.
•Works with facilities throughout the region to provide clients with appropriate and timely treatment.
•Overnight guests must meet regularly with the case manager to determine needs and develop life plan.
•Works with available community resources to help end homelessness episodes.

Transitional Housing Program
•Assist men in transitioning from emergency shelter to permanent housing.
•Provides workplace transportation.
•Participants must meet weekly with Case Manager to monitor housing and other needs.
•Supervision 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
•Participants can stay up to 24 months.

STOP (STREET Outreach Program)
•Connects those living on the street with community resources to help achieve residential stability.
•Serves anyone and everyone who is living on the streets in the Birmingham area.

Permanent Supportive Housing
•A 32-bed apartment complex providing clients with supportive services needed to maintain housing.
•Allows intervention to prevent recurrence of homeless episode.

Safe Haven
•Alabama's only housing for homeless men with a severe mental illness.
•Provides food, clothing, laundry, storage, and basic health care.
•Non-intrusive, low demand environment helps clients reestablish trust and re-engage in needed treatment.

Rolling with JeT

The following organization may be helpful for individuals with disabilities in the New Orleans, LA area who are in need of transportation assistance: Jefferson Transit (JeT) offers specialized transportation services for individuals with disabilities who are unable to utilize the regular fixed route system. Through the Mobility Impaired Transportation System (MITS), JeT provides curb-to-curb and demand responsive services to eligible individuals within Jefferson Parish. To be eligible for MITS services, individuals must complete an application that shows that they cannot use or navigate the regular fixed route system due to a permanent, temporary or intermittent disability. Once the form is completed and returned, MITS will send a form to the healthcare professional specified on the application to verify the applicants condition. Once the healthcare authorization form is received, MITS will schedule an in-person interview with the applicant. Applicants will be notified within 21 days after their in-person interview of whether they are eligible to receive MITS services.  MITS service area includes Jefferson Parish and a limited area of Orleans Parish including Delgado Community College, the New Orleans Central Business District and the Medical Center/Tulane Medical Complex. MITS riders can also transfer to RTA's Paratransit service (LIFT) at the Eastbank or Westbank transfer points. For each one-way trip, MITS riders must pay a fare of $3; however there are no charges for personal care attendants traveling with a MITS rider.
