Keys to a New Beginning  - House of Ruth

The following organization may be helpful for families and individuals with disabilities in the New Orleans, LA area who are in need of housing assistance: The House of Ruth is an organization in the New Orleans area that provides assistance to individuals and families who are homeless and/or in crisis. For over 20 years, House of Ruth has provided families and individuals in the Orleans and Jefferson parishes the support and services they need to regain independence and self-sufficiency. These services often include rent and deposit assistance, job bank information, case management, adopt-a-family program, goal setting and budgeting and GED and adult literacy training. 707084_homeless_.jpg To be eligible to receive services through the House of Ruth, families and/or individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Low Income
  • A family with children who are presently homeless or pending homelessness
  • Currently homeless or received eviction notice
  • Likelihood to restabilize in the near future
  • Sudden loss of income due to unexpected crisis
  • Willingness to search for employment and hold a job

The following service may be helpful to veterans and individuals with disabilities in the Cleveland, OH area:

Our nation's veterans have done so much for our country and now it's time for them to receive the same support they have given. There are several situations where a veteran may not be able to live independently because their symptoms and vital signs must be checked frequently. Cleveland, OH veterans who have chronic heart failure, diabetes, hypertension, spinal cord injuries, COPD, schizophrenia, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder or dementia now have ways to get help conveniently when they need it the most.

Through the Care Coordination/Home Telehealth (CCHT) program, veterans are able to report their vital signs and symptoms from the comfort of their own home. The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center provides devices called the "Health Buddy" and "ATI LifeView" to patients. Through these devices individuals are connected directly to their Care Manager via standard phone lines and/or high speed internet through the CCHT program.

The program targets the small percentages of people who use 30 percent of costs, are frequent clinic attendes and require urgent hospital admissions. The goal is to reduce hospital admissions, clinic and emergency room visits.

Providing the Comfort of Home

The following organization may be helpful to individuals with disabilities or families in the Columbus, OH area who are in a housing transition and in need of furniture assistance: The Furniture Bank of Central, Ohio (formerly known as MAP Furniture Bank) provides free furniture and household goods for those who are in need of turning their empty houses into homes. It is the only furniture bank in Central Ohio and supports approximately 50 social service agencies that refer clients on a weekly basis. The average Furniture Bank client leaves with 12 to 14 pieces of furniture such as mattresses, box springs, dressers, couches, chairs, coffee tables, lamps, kitchen tables, kitchen chairs and other various household goods. furniture.jpg The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio also offers clients the option of delivery service. For a small fee, Furniture can be delivered on the same day it's ordered. Same-day delivery must be requested by your case manager or sponsor at the time the appointment is made. The Furniture Bank offers its delivery service within a 16 mile radius of Columbus, OH. If you are in need of furniture, please contact a case manager at your local social service agency and ask them about a referral to The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio. In certain cases, the Furniture Bank will accept referrals from places of worship or employment; however referrals from social service agencies receive first priority. Each agency has expectations and requirements for families and individuals who are seeking to be accepted as clients.

The following organization may be helpful to individuals with disabilities or families in the Memphis, TN area who are in need of grocery assistance: With a mission to meet the needs of the hungry, homeless and displaced citizens of Memphis, FirstWorks provides food and hygiene items for those in need. Through FirstWorks' food pantry, clients receive a week's supply of food which generally includes:

  • Cereal
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Soup
  • Canned Meat
  • Fruits and Vegetables
  • Snacks
  • Nutritional Supplements

In addition to food assistance, clients also receive hygiene bags that include toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, feminine products and various other items that may be needed. FirstWorks Food Pantry is open to clients Tuesday through Friday from 10am until 1pm and is located at the corner of Highland and Summer Avenue. The Food Pantry is stocked by donations from the Memphis community, downtown churches and other faith-based organizations.
