Number of people receiving Social Security disability benefits who are disabled, under age 65-     14,194,000 (includes children receiving SSI)
Receiving SSI only-        4,604,000.

The average monthly benefit amount for a disabled worker was $1,022.41.

A disability beneficiary is eligible to receive Medicare after they have received SSDI for 24 months. This time period starts from the date the Administration determines your disability started, so many people receive insurance right away once their benefits are approved.
