Lupus

Lupus is a disease that results in the body’s tissues coming under attack from its own immune system. Lupus is also described as a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect many different parts of the body. Inflammation can be severe, causing swelling, pain and functional disturbances, and the effects of lupus can be life threatening for some. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, as many as two million Americans may suffer from lupus. There is currently no evidence of a clear cause for lupus, but researchers suspect a combination of genetic and environmental factors may result in the development of this disease.

Lupus sufferers are often forced to deal with severe degrees of fatigue and weakness, making even simple activities difficult. Skin system may be affected in varying degrees, depending on the severity and stage of the disease. The effects of lupus can include:

  • Tissue, heart sac, and blood vessel inflammation
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Tissue damage
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Light sensitivity
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Memory loss
  • Hair loss
  • Weight changes
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Kidney problems
  • Anemia

Lupus Treatments

There are many things than can be done for lupus patients, depending on the symptoms they exhibit. People with lupus are encouraged to protect their skin by avoiding direct sunlight and using sun protection when necessary. Skin rashes can be treated with corticosteroid creams. Joint or muscle pain may be controlled with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, and anti-malarial medications may be recommended to treat fatigue, inflammation and other symptoms.

Immune-suppressing medications are often used to help the immune system normalize. Lupus patients may also be encouraged to adjust their lifestyle and behavioral habits to promote optimum health with exercise, diet and preventive care.
